My first day in Wanaka started with a decision to go skiing at Treble Cone for the day.
Treble Cone isn’t too far from Wanaka, however, it is one very impressive and dangerous drive to get up the mountain.
After turning off the highway you travel up the mountain on rough gravel with hairpin turns and no safety barriers – I would not want to travel this road with snow and ice.
Once I was up the mountain I hired some skis and did a few runs of the Home Basin, where the view from the mountain over Lake Wanaka is one of the best views of any ski fields I’ve been to.
I then headed across to the Saddle Basin with a free guided tour group.
Unfortunately after I finished with this group I ended up taking a tumble down a rather steep chute and had to be rescued by ski patrol. I hurt my knee a little in the tumble so rather than risk any more injury I made my way back to the base area and ended the day a few hours early.
Once I had warmed up inside the cafe I drove back to Wanaka for the night, stopping off to take a photo of Mt Aspiring.
