Christmas in Northern Europe 2023 – Part Four: Salzburg

Returning to Salzburg eight years after my first visit in 2015 brought a strong sense of nostalgia—though this time around, the snow-covered winter wonderland of my previous trip was replaced by persistent grey skies and drizzling rain.

Looking through my camera roll afterward, it was almost comical to realize that even nearly a decade later, I managed to capture almost the exact same vantage points and landmarks!

Upon arriving in the city, we walked through Mirabell Gardens. Back in 2015, sections of the gardens were closed due to heavy snow, but this time it was open green lawns under a low overcast cloud layer.

We crossed over the Salzach River toward the Altstadt (Old Town).

We passed right by Mozart’s Geburtshaus and walked down Getreidegasse.

In 2015, I managed to miss the entrance to the cable car entirely and ended up trudging all the way up the steep hill to the castle on foot through the snow. This time around we took the Festungsbahn funicular straight up through the rock tunnel.

Before heading back toward the train station for our evening return to Munich, we stopped at Petersfriedhof (St. Peter’s Cemetery) nestled directly against the sheer rock face.
